About WhyIsMyHouse
WhyIsMyHouse is a diagnostic reference for homeowners and renters. You describe the symptom — a smell, a noise, a temperature swing — and we walk you through the most likely causes, ranked by how often they actually turn out to be the culprit.
How our diagnosis pages work
Every page is written the way a home inspector would explain it: what to check first, what it typically costs, what you can safely do yourself, and the point at which a licensed professional is the cheaper option.
What we don't do
We don't sell products and we don't rank fixes by affiliate payout. Where a popular "solution" doesn't work, we say so.
The problems we cover
The library spans the symptoms homeowners actually search for: humidity, condensation and mold; basement and crawl-space water; drain, sewer and water-pressure faults; heating and cooling that never reaches the thermostat setting; flickering lights and tripping breakers; foundation, wall and floor movement; roof and gutter leaks; drafty windows and doors; smells; noises; and pests. Alongside the diagnosis pages sit service explainers, cost guides with national price ranges, and side-by-side comparisons for the repair-versus -replace decisions that follow a diagnosis.
How to use these guides safely
A guide narrows the list of likely causes and tells you which checks are safe to do yourself. It cannot see your house. Nothing here replaces an on-site inspection by a licensed electrician, plumber, HVAC contractor, pest operator or structural engineer, and you should treat any symptom involving gas, carbon monoxide, sewage, standing water near electrical equipment, or suspected structural movement as a reason to stop reading and call for professional help.
