Blown-in fiberglass or cellulose (attic)
The most common attic insulation upgrade — loose-fill material is blown evenly across the attic floor to the target depth, typically R-49 to R-60 depending on climate zone.
Spray foam insulation
Open- or closed-cell spray foam applied to rafters, rim joists, or wall cavities creates an air seal and insulation layer in one step, ideal for irregular spaces and crawl spaces.
Dense-pack cellulose (existing walls)
Cellulose is blown into finished wall cavities through small drilled holes, adding insulation to older homes without removing drywall or siding.

Home Insulation safety and licensing
- If your attic has vermiculite insulation (common in homes built before 1990), do not disturb it — have it tested for asbestos before any insulation work begins.
- Never block soffit vents with insulation; blocked ventilation traps moisture and contributes to ice dams and attic mold, per building code and InterNACHI guidance.
- Keep insulation at least 3 inches from recessed lighting fixtures unless they're rated IC (insulation contact), per NEC and manufacturer requirements, to avoid fire risk.

Is spray foam better than blown-in insulation?
